Community Development and Impact
Ammankulam Preschool
Ammankulam Preschool, previously in a remote, elephant-prone area, now enjoys a secure building thanks to Mr. Daniel’s land donation and additional funding from Ocean Stars and Calthorpe Park School’s fundraising efforts. The new building was inaugurated with a traditional Hindu milk-boiling ritual, symbolizing prosperity, followed by speeches expressing gratitude from parents, staff, and local dignitaries. The children eagerly explored their new preschool, enjoying snacks, songs, and activities with the Ocean Stars team. This moment highlighted the profound impact of Ocean Stars’ commitment to providing quality early education and transforming community lives.

Mahadeva Children’s Home

Friday 26th April 2024
In Kilinochchi Ocean Stars Trust has been supporting Mahadeva Children’s Home since 2012 which was set up by the late Mr Rasanayagam. Initially set up for children orphaned by the Civil war in Sri Lanka today it is home to children whose parents are unable to look after them and those sent through social services and the court system. Our staff and volunteers find the home and its environment an oasis of calm, love and friendship. The children excel at school and at sports and are always pleased to see us
Women’s Empowerment Projects
Ocean Stars Trust runs three women’s empowerment projects Hope House 1, 2, and 3 providing women in rural villages with opportunities to escape poverty by learning sewing skills. Established in 2017 by Jessica Butcher MBE, whose continued support has been instrumental, Hope Houses have trained approximately 350 women, enabling them to gain employment in garment factories or start their own businesses. The courses, now accredited by the Sri Lankan government, award students an NVQ Level 4 Qualification, offering them a path to independence and financial stability.

Impact of Calthorpe Park Visits

The visits from Calthorpe Park School have had a transformative impact on the communities supported by Ocean Stars Trust. These visits are more than just cultural exchanges; they foster meaningful connections, mutual learning, and lasting friendships between students and local communities. The fundraising efforts by Calthorpe Park students have directly contributed to significant projects, such as building preschools and providing resources for early years education. Their visits bring joy and inspiration to the children, with engaging activities like storytelling, singing, and games that create cherished memories. The presence of the students reinforces the spirit of global solidarity, highlighting the power of young people to drive positive change and leave an enduring legacy of hope and empowerment.
